2024 Aerial Burns Campaign
Tuesday 23 July to Saturday 27 July 2024
To help reduce the size and intensity of late season wildfires, Rio Tinto Weipa will be conducting aerial burns to portions of the broader mining lease/s.
These burns will be administered using a helicopter and will be targeting the following areas of the lease:
- Wenlock River area to Skardon River(North of Weipa)
- North of the Mission Riverto south of Wenlock River(Ely)
- Between the Embley and Hey rivers (Kwokkunum)
- South of the Embley River (Amrun), inc Hey Pt, Boyd’s Bay
- South of Norman Creek to Aurukun Road.
The burns will be conducted over 5 days between 23 - 27 July 2024.
Please keep clear of the above areas during these times and avoid any recreational activities in proximity to the areas e.g. camping.
